Independent Medical Assessment

An independent medical assessment also known as an Independent Medical Examination (IME) – is a medical evaluation of an individual conducted by a doctor who has no prior relationship with the patient and is not involved in their ongoing care.

Unlike a management referral, which is usually a collaborative, internal tool to support an employee’s return to work, an IMA is typically requested by an external body (such as an insurance company, a legal team or a pension scheme) to resolve a specific dispute or make a formal, legal determination regarding a person’s long-term health status.
