A night worker assessment is a health check that employers must legally offer to any employee who regularly works overnight.
Under the UK’s working time regulations 1998 a “night worker” is defined as someone who usually works at least 3 hours during “nighttime” (the window between 11pm and 6am).
The primary purpose of the assessment is to identify whether working night shifts puts an employee’s health at risk or worsens an existing medical condition.
Key information:
1. It must be offered before the employee begins night shift duties.
2. It must be offered regularly.
3. It is voluntary for the employee, however, employers must keep a written record proving that the test was offered.
